Trapped for stealing items with AirTag

A THIEF was caught after a short time thanks to the AirTag attached to the key chain and among the stolen items.

According to the Northern Echo , 28-year-old thief Dylan Balmer broke into a woman's home in the town of Hartlepool, took her handbag and other items, including a keychain with an AirTag . Balmer was unaware of the presence of Apple devices and took them all to a nearby hotel room.

After discovering the stolen property, the woman immediately accessed her iPhone to find the location of AirTag and reported it to the police.

According to the extract from the hotel camera, Balmer's clothes matched the identification from the cameras of surrounding households when the theft occurred. "Balmer snuck in because the door was unlocked," prosecutor Shaun Dryden said. "When the victim arrived, he took the initiative to return the keys."

The burglary happened on March 26 but was tried last week. In court, Balmer initially said he did not intend to steal, but later pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

AirTag was introduced by Apple in April 2021. The device connects to iPhone via Bluetooth, supports speakerphone, accelerometer and battery. The battery can work for one year. The U1 chip helps to provide precise location, creating haptic and acoustic feedback to easily find objects. Users can track all information through the Find My application on iPhone.

With its features, AirTag has repeatedly helped owners find lost items, such as helping to track down $ 1.1 million stolen in May. However, the device is also controversial when it is becoming a tool to help Bad guys invade the privacy of others. Some crooks also use AirTag to track the victim's route, planning theft.
